Introducing: Emily Brown, Photographer

Quite a few years ago, before I started working in the software industry, I was a graphic designer.

So when a friend of mine recently asked me to design a website for her photography business, I jumped at the chance. After overworking the left hemisphere of my brain all day every day in the software business, I often feel like I need to pay more attention to my artistic endeavors, to prevent the right side of my brain from withering away entirely.

This was a fun project. And, the whole thing only took about a day and a half, from start to finish (including the code and the database), so it wasn’t too much of a distraction.

Anyhow, without further ado, I present to you: Emily Brown Photography

I’m pretty happy with how the website turned out, but I can’t really take much credit for it. I just tried to get out of the way and let her excellent photography speak for itself.

No doubt this looked fine on your development machine, but on a real host the images have a strange effect as they load slowly. I’d suggest adding width and height attributes to all images (thumbnails and full sized), so that you don’t get the layout shifting as each image loads.

Contentwise, I’d also suggest reducing the number of photos in the wedding category. Far from showcasing the photographer’s talent, the repetition of the same bride simply seems to suggest the inexperience of the photographer, with few weddings to drawn on. You shouldn’t need more examples than can fit on a page without scrolling - especailly as if you do scroll and pick one of the revealed photos, then selecting it resets to the top of the gallery again.

Yeah, this was the first pass, where I put up most of her content. During the next pass, she’ll tell me what order to put the images, and which ones to take down.
